Hymen Repair, also known as Hymenoplasty is a procedure to surgically restore the hymen in women for social, religious, cultural or ethnic purposes.
The hymen is a sign of purity in many cultures whereas scientific evidence suggests that this thin membrane was meant to keep out infection in the vagina. However a hymen is a sign of virginity, the hymen undergoes a tear during the first intercourse. It can get ruptured due to non-sexual reasons such as running, jumping or any other form of athletic activities; some women are also born without a hymen!
How Hymenoplasty Is Performed?
Hymenoplasty is usually a 30-45 minute procedure and can be done in an out-patient surgery centre or in-office using general or local anaesthesia. The doctor uses dissolvable stitches to reconnect the membrane that once partially covered the opening to the vagina.
It is a very simple procedure that must be done at least 4 to 6 weeks before the wedding so the internal sutures have disappeared completely.
A tear-through biomaterial can be inserted. This is also a temporary measure, carried out shortly before marriage.
In this procedure, the surgeon will create a new hymen using tissues from the lip of the vagina. However, this method will require you to abstain from sexual intercourse for a minimum of three months. The operation takes between one and two hours, and the patient can return to work the next day. Dissolvable stitches are used.
