Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to give the face a more refreshed and youthful appearance. It reshapes mainly the lower half of the face by removing the excess skin. There are multiple techniques and exercise routines for a facelift. Surgical facelifts are normally combined with other procedures as fillers, Botox, or blepharoplasty to give an overall improvement in facial aesthetics. However with the advancements in the techniques of non-surgical facial rejuvenation such as lasers, Botox, fillers, threads, peels, thermage, fat transfer, PRP, micro needling and lipo dissolve injections etc the requests for a surgical facelift have gone down remarkably.

How is a facelift done?

A facelift is done mostly under general anaesthesia or intravenous sedation depending on the facelift procedure. Incisions are often in the hairline region at the temples and continue around the ear and ends in the lower scalps. Skin is lifted from the underlying facial structures as a thin layer in the subcutaneous plane and fat is either sculpted or repositioned muscles are tightened and the skin is re-draped over the new contours and excess skin is trimmed. Foraging neck a second incision is made under the chin and lift is carried out as necessary. Skin incisions are then closed with absorbable sutures.

What are the types of Facelift surgery?

There are two types of surgical facelifts slandered facelift and mini facelift as per the requirements of the patients.

Mini Facelift:

It is done for a patient having a small degree of sagging skin and jowls. Smaller incisions are made in the natural creases around the year through which tissues around the cheeks are tightened and lifted to refine the jaw line by correcting the jowls. This may be done under local anaesthesia with sedation. Patients are discharged on the day of surgery.

Standard Facelift:

It is done under general anaesthesia and it more fully addresses the signs of moderate to advanced ageing of the midface and neck region. The results are more dramatic. The incisions are located just behind the hairline starting near temples and around the natural folds in front of the ear and go behind in the hairline of the scalp region. It not only removes bowling but also sagging skin under the chin and restores a more youthful appearance to the face and neck.

How long does facelift last?

The results last as per the invasiveness of the technique. The more invasive a procedure the results last longer. In a standard facelift, the results can last for up to 15 years. In the mini facelift, the results may last from 2 to 6 years.

Is facelift a major surgery?

Yes, the standard facelift is major surgery. However, the mini facelift is a relatively minor procedure.

Who is a good candidate for facelift surgery?

Like any other cosmetic surgery, a patient with realistic expectations and willingness to follow the post-operative instructions is a good candidate for a facelift. Apart from these two major criteria loose skin on the face and neck, skin elasticity, strong bony structure and good overall health, qualify and prognosticate a candidate for a facelift.

What are the risks of a facelift (rhytidectomy)?

Complications of facelift surgery are infrequent, and cosmetic procedures are generally safe, as long as they are carried out by a qualified and experienced professional.

However, any surgery comes with some risk.

If the patient notices inflammation, pain, redness or swelling in the days following surgery, they should seek medical help. This could be a sign of hematoma. If there is a fever, they may have an infection.

Skin necrosis and facial nerve paralysis are other infrequent complications in less experienced hands.

What results should I expect after a facelift?

While most people are presentable to the public within 10-14 days, it will take 2-3 months for the face to feel "back to normal" in terms of texture, sensibility and loss of tightness.

Continuing daily sun protection and a healthy lifestyle will help extend the results of your facelift.

As swelling and bruising subside, the visible improvements of a facelift appear. Your final result should not only provide a more youthful and rested appearance but also help you feel more confident about yourself.

It is important to have realistic expectations when undergoing cosmetic surgery. The results are often permanent.
