Hymen Repair

Hymen Repair, also known as Hymenoplasty is a procedure to surgically restore the hymen in women for social, religious, cultural or ethnic purposes.

The hymen is a sign of purity in many cultures whereas scientific evidence suggests that this thin membrane was meant to keep out infection in the vagina. However a hymen is a sign of virginity, the hymen undergoes a tear during the first intercourse. It can get ruptured due to non-sexual reasons such as running, jumping or any other form of athletic activities; some women are also born without a hymen!

How Hymenoplasty Is Performed?

  1. Simple repair

Hymenoplasty is usually a 30-45 minute procedure and can be done in an out-patient surgery centre or in-office using general or local anaesthesia. The doctor uses dissolvable stitches to reconnect the membrane that once partially covered the opening to the vagina.

It is a very simple procedure that must be done at least 4 to 6 weeks before the wedding so the internal sutures have disappeared completely.

  1. Alloplant:

A tear-through biomaterial can be inserted. This is also a temporary measure, carried out shortly before marriage.

  1. Hymen reconstruction

In this procedure, the surgeon will create a new hymen using tissues from the lip of the vagina. However, this method will require you to abstain from sexual intercourse for a minimum of three months. The operation takes between one and two hours, and the patient can return to work the next day. Dissolvable stitches are used.

When is the treatment done?

Suitable candidates are –

  • Those who have ruptured their hymen due to sex or other activities
  • Those who are above 18 years of age
  • Women who are healthy and don't suffer from any serious illnesses

Who is not eligible for hymen repair?

women suffering from cancer of the genital tract or venereal diseases are not eligible for hymenoplasty Surgery.

What are the side effects of hymenoplasty?

  • Post-op swelling, pain and bruising
  • Hematomas and bleeding
  • Discolouration of the hymen
  • Numbness

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

  • You will need to keep the area clean and will be on antibiotics to prevent any infection.
  • You should use warm compresses and ice-packs to ease pain and swelling.
  • You can take a bath 2 – 3 days after the surgery.
  • You need to refrain from sex until 8 weeks after the surgery.
  • How long does it take to recover?
  • It takes around 4 to 6 weeks for complete healing.

Is Hymenoplasty treatment permanent?

Yes, Hymenoplasty enables the maintenance of restored hymen till the next sexual encounter.

Why Do Some Women want to reconstruct the Hymen?

  • Cultural or religious reasons
  • As part of the rape, incest, the sexual abuse healing process
  • Injury to the hymen prior to marriage
  • Revirginization.
